The historic ‘Nupi Lal’ (women’s war) day was observed in Tripura, Assam and Bangladesh besides in Manipur to pay rich tributes to women freedom fighters who took part in the war against colonial British actions in 1904 and 1939.

Septuagenarian journalist Atin Das was arrested on Friday in Assam’s Hailakandi district for referring to Mahatma Gandhi as “a spy of the British” before being released on bail, the police said.

She was sent to jail after legal proceedings. At the end of the trial, the court announced a two-year sentence for her. The sentence expired on December 27, 2020. The woman has since been kept in the Central Jail Transit Camp (formerly Detention Camp) in Silchar.
