It was a heartbreak for Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu in the Paris Games as she finished fourth in the women’s 49 kg weightlifting final here on Wednesday. After the final, Manipuri lifter revealed that she felt weakness on stage as it was the third day of her menstruation.
A day of heartbreaks has just turned worse for Indian fans as top medal hopeful and silver medallist at the Tokyo Olympics, S. Mirabai Chanu finished fourth in the women’s 49 kg weightlifting final here on Wednesday.
One of the four individual Indian athletes hoping for a repeat of their success from the Tokyo Olympics and win back-to-back medals, weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu is the lone weightlifter representing the country in the Paris Olympic Games.
Maharashtra, however, continued their stranglehold on the top position in the medal tally, finishing the day with a total of 53 gold, 53 silver and 47 bronze medals. Haryana and M.P remained in second and third position with 40 and 36 golds respectively.
In Panchkula last year, the Manipuri weightlifter created a total of eight National records and was congratulated for her feats by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for her performance.
