The regional committees of Assam and Meghalaya met in Guwahati on Saturday to examine three disputed sectors along the interstate boundary, according to the ministers of the two states in charge of the panels. 

Once a stronghold of the Congress, the eight northeastern states are now dominated by the BJP and the state parties, which are indispensable for the national parties to govern the region.

The death toll due to the floods in Assam has increased to eight after a man fell in the overflowing water and died in Sonitpur district, with more than 1 lakh people still affected in the state, officials said on Tuesday.

The Assam cabinet has decided that government employee in Assam irrespective of his or her class of service, must work in "difficult" (Durgam) areas of the state at least for a period of three to five years in their whole service period.
