A voter turnout of 20.99 per cent was recorded in Karnataka Assembly elections till 11 a.m on Wednesday, according to the Election Commission. The polling, which began at 7 a.m. on a dull note, subsequently gathered pace.

Karnataka Congress President D.K. Shivakumar said on Wednesday that the people will vote for change and for a progressive state, and exuded confidence that the party will win 141 Assembly seats.

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Wednesday cast his ballot in the ongoing election for the 224-member state Assembly, saying that he was confident of the BJP forming a majority government.

Karnataka recorded an average 8.26 per cent voter turnout till 9 a.m. after completion of the first round of voting which is underway on Wednesday to elect the 224-member state Assembly.

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Wednesday offered a special pooja with his family at Anjaneya (Hanuman) temple in Ashok Nagar before casting his vote for the Assembly polls.

The polling, which started at 7 a.m., will continue till 6 p.m. Brisk voting is expected across the state, as major political parties in the state are locked in the close contest.

As many as 9.87 lakh people have taken part in the public rallies and conventions in the state, while a whopping 19.81 lakh people had taken part in roadshows organised at different cities across the state, the saffron party claimed.

The Karnataka State Election Commission has made eloborate arrangements for the May 10 Assembly elections in the state. To ensure no untoward incidents take place, the commission is deputing 1.56 lakh police personnel across the state.

The BJP has lodged a complaint with the Election Commission and the Chief Electoral Officer of Karnataka against Sonia Gandhi for making the statement, "the Congress will not allow anyone to pose a threat to Karnataka's reputation, sovereignty or integrity."
