Pema Khandu, who was re-elected as the BJP Legislature Party leader on Wednesday, took oath as Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister for the third straight term on Thursday.

At least five Congress MLAs in Assam have openly supported BJP or other party candidates in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections. However, they did not leave the Congress to avoid anti-defection.

Three MPs from the northeastern states -- two from Assam and one from Arunachal Pradesh -- were on Sunday accommodated in the new government headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi against five in the previous government.

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), which operates in the northeastern states and parts of West Bengal and Bihar, has taken a series of measures to ensure the smooth running of trains during the rainy season.

In line with the rest of the country, the Congress put up an improved performance in the Lok Sabha elections in the eight northeastern states, which are now dominated by the BJP and its allies.  

In the prestigious Arunachal West seat, Union Minister Rijiju, who secured 2,05,417 votes, defeated state Congress President and party nominee Nabam Tuki by a margin of 1,00,738 votes.

The BJP and its ally partners are leading on 11 Lok Sabha seats in Assam. The BJP is leading on nine seats while its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) are leading on each seat.

The ruling BJP will likely form a government for the third consecutive term in Arunachal Pradesh as it has won ten seats uncontested and is leading in 22 other seats in the 60-member Assembly.

Railway tracks in Silchar, New Haflong, Bandarkhal and Chandranathpur section faced damages due to waterlogging caused due to the incessant rains in the aftermath of Cyclone Remal earlier this week.

At least 36 people were killed in heavy rains and landslides in four northeastern states on Tuesday under the impact of Cyclone Remal while normal life came to a grinding halt in all the eight states of the region with road and rail links affected, officials said.
