On 50 years of imposing Emergency across India by the then Congress government led by Indira Gandhi, the BJP on Tuesday took out protest rallies in different northeastern states.

Amid the visit of the Inter-Ministerial Central team to assess the damage due to Cyclone Remal last month, the Mizoram government has urged the Central government to provide Rs 237.6 crore to the state to rehabilitate the affected people and repair the damage to the properties caused by landslides and rain triggered by the cyclone.

The Higher Education Department in Assam has extended the date of admissions to undergraduate courses in colleges across the state as the monsoon flood has impacted the whole process, with many students failing to reach the institutions for admission, officials said.

The Congress staged protests in several northeastern states on Friday over alleged irregularities in the NEET and UGC-NET, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and action against the guilty.

Incessant monsoon rains during the past few days triggered landslides, floods and water-logging in several northeastern states, affecting around 3.20 lakh people and badly affecting normal life besides damaging public and private property, officials said on Wednesday.

A police official said that the victim’s body was found in the Meijao Mamang Leikai area was found with a bullet wound on the back of the head. Police are probing the incident.

According to police sources, Chetia’s wife was battling cancer and she passed away at a private hospital here. Following her death, the senior police official shot himself with his service pistol in the hospital.

Around 30 more refugees comprising nine families took shelter in Mizoram from the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) of southeast Bangladesh during the last two days, officials said here on Tuesday.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday stressed the strategic deployment of the central forces to restore peace and tranquillity in Manipur and directed the officials to ensure that no further incident of violence takes place in the northeastern state. 

Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey on Sunday called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan and discussed the situation in the state, officials said adding that the President assured to extend all possible support.

As tension still prevails in Manipur's mixed-population Jiribam district, additional CRPF troopers have been deployed in the interior areas of its Borobekra subdivision to maintain peace and tranquillity, officials said on Sunday. 

In view of the heavy rain and the red alert sounded by the meteorological department for the next two days in the Lumding-Badarpur Hill section, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) on Saturday cancelled eight express trains between Silchar and other cities of Assam for Sunday.

Owing to cyclonic circulations, Assam and other states in the northeastern region are set to receive heavy rain in the next few days, weather officials said on Saturday.

A senior official said that the Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has decided to provide Rs 10,000 to every flood-affected family as immediate relief assistance.

In the prestigious Arunachal West seat, Union Minister Rijiju, who secured 2,05,417 votes, defeated state Congress President and party nominee Nabam Tuki by a margin of 1,00,738 votes.

The BJP and its ally partners are leading on 11 Lok Sabha seats in Assam. The BJP is leading on nine seats while its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) are leading on each seat.

The ruling BJP will likely form a government for the third consecutive term in Arunachal Pradesh as it has won ten seats uncontested and is leading in 22 other seats in the 60-member Assembly.

Railway tracks in Silchar, New Haflong, Bandarkhal and Chandranathpur section faced damages due to waterlogging caused due to the incessant rains in the aftermath of Cyclone Remal earlier this week.
