Three special observers of the Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday asked officials in Tripura to take foolproof steps to hold the February 16 Assembly polls in a free, fair and transparent manner.

Besides the special observers, the EC also appointed five other categories of observers - general observers, police observers, expenditure observers, micro observers in each polling station and counting observers.

Minister Nath further alleged that a section of civil administration officials engaged with election work intentionally covered the pictures of Prime Minister Narendra Modi by putting ink on the pictures.

As the poll in Tripura’s 60 Assembly seats is slated to be held on February 16, the Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) on January 25 would declare the name of the candidates for contesting the poll.

Speaking with TripuraIndia, an official from Chief Electoral office said that a special observer team of three members is coming to the state today to take stock of the overall situation in the state.

Tripura ruling coalition member Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) has been holding seat-sharing talks with both current ally BJP and opposition Tipraha Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance (TIPRA) for the February 16 assembly polls.

Hours after the Election Commission announced the date for the Tripura Assembly polls, a 44-year-old worker of the tribal Tipraha Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance (TIPRA) party was killed in Dhalai district, police said on Thursday.

CPI (M) state committee secretary Jitendra Choudhury on Wednesday has demanded to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) to remove all campaign materials from public properties.
