Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday tendered his resignation to Governor Raghubar Das following the party’s defeat in the Assembly elections.

In line with the rest of the country, the Congress put up an improved performance in the Lok Sabha elections in the eight northeastern states, which are now dominated by the BJP and its allies.  

In the prestigious Arunachal West seat, Union Minister Rijiju, who secured 2,05,417 votes, defeated state Congress President and party nominee Nabam Tuki by a margin of 1,00,738 votes.

BJP candidate and former Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, who secured a record 8,81,341 votes, won the Tripura West Lok Sabha seat, defeating state Congress President and party nominee Ashish Kumar Saha by a margin of 6,11,578 votes.

Giving his first reactions on the impressive numbers achieved by his party and the INDIA bloc partners in the Lok Sabha elections, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said on Tuesday that it was a fight to save the Constitution and the Constitutional institutions from the persistent onslaught of the ruling party.

The BJP and its ally partners are leading on 11 Lok Sabha seats in Assam. The BJP is leading on nine seats while its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) are leading on each seat.

Ruling BJP candidate Dipak Majumder on Tuesday won the by-election to the Ramnagar Assembly seat in Tripura defeating his CPI(M) opponent Ratan Das by a margin of 18,014 votes.

In 2014, PM Modi got 56.37 per cent of the votes and his winning margin was 3.72 lakh. He had defeated Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal, who was his main rival.

Union Minister Smriti Irani is set to lose Amethi, where she is trailing against Kishori Lal Sharma of the Congress by over 1.45 lakh votes. The shock results were most unexpected since the minister and her campaigners considered Sharma a ‘small fry’.

01:36: After 9th round of poll counting for 7-Ramnagar assembly constituency - BJP candidate Dipak Majumder is leading with 21948 votes, while while the I.N.D.I.A bloc candidate Ratan Das is trailing with 6021 votes and NOTA received-746.

12:57 PM: In 7-Ramnagar assembly constituency, BJP candidate Dipak Majumder is leading with 20356 votes, while the I.N.D.I.A bloc candidate Ratan Das is trailing with 5359 votes. NOTA received 688 votes.

The BJP-led NDA was leading in 297 constituencies, while the opposition INDIA bloc was ahead in 226 and other parties in 20, as per the latest trends of the counting of votes for the Lok Sabha polls on Tuesday. 

12:27 PM: In 7-Ramnagar assembly constituency, BJP candidate Dipak Majumder is leading with 17915 votes, while the I.N.D.I.A bloc candidate Ratan Das is in trailing with 4303 votes.

12:08 AM: BJP candidate Biplab Kumar Deb is leading by 547772 votes (total vote – 782019) in the West parliamentary constituency, while the I.N.D.I.A bloc and congress candidate Ashish Kumar Saha is training with 234247 votes.

As counting for the 2 parliamentary constituencies in Tripura including the 7-Ramnagar assembly constituency for by-election is underway, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is heading for win in both the East and West parliamentary constituencies and in 7-Ramnagar.

Indian equity indices saw a steep fall on Tuesday after early counting trends showed a tough contest between the NDA and the opposition INDIA bloc in the Lok Sabha elections.
