10th National Handloom Day observed at Agartala

AGARTALA:

The Tripura along with the rest of the nation on Wednesday observed the 10th National Handloom Day to acknowledge and honour the weavers of the state and their invaluable contribution to the state’s socio-economic development.

Minister Bikash Debbarma has inaugurated an event here at Agartala Pragna Bhavan to observe the day and said that the state government has taken multiple projects to modernize the weavers' own innovative products and improve the socio-economic status of the weavers. He said that initiatives have been taken to strengthen all clusters and weavers centers in the state.

A seminar was also organised jointly by the Department of Handloom, Handicrafts and Silk Industries and the Weavers Service Center of the Union Ministry of Textiles.

Taking part in the seminar here at Pragna Bhavan, MLA and also the Chairman of Handloom, Handicrafts and Silk Industry Limited Kishore Barman said that Swadeshi cloth is a traditional culture of any country. He said, Swadeshi movement started in the country in 1905. In recognition of this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the National Handloom Day on 7 August 2015 in Chennai, he added.

Deputy Director of Wavers Service Center Arnab Chowdhury, Senior Manager of NHDCL Subrata Bhattacharya, and Resource Person Prahlad Debnath among others spoke in the seminar.

Nirmala Sinha, a Divyang woman in her fifties, was felicitated on Wednesday with the prestigious National Handloom Award 2023 during the National Handloom Day celebrations at Vigyan Manch, New Delhi. Sinha, a resident of Barasurma village in Dhalai district was recognized and shortlisted from Tripura, among a total of 17 recipients from different parts of the country, for this award.

BJP Janjati Morcha slams CPIM’s tribal wing

The Janjati Morcha, the tribal wing of Tripura’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has strongly criticized the Gana Mukti Parishad (GMP), the tribal wing of the opposition CPI(M), for accusing the government of neglecting indigenous communities. The BJP leaders dismissed the allegations as baseless and labeled GMP’s planned Raj Bhawan Abhiyan on January 9 as a futile exercise.
