The highly anticipated rail connectivity project between Bangladesh and India, linking Akhaura in Bangladesh and Agartala in India, is set to be inaugurated virtually during the upcoming G20 Summit scheduled for September 9 to 10.
Sources from NF Railway said, “The successful completion of a trial locomotive run on the Akhaura-Agartala railway line underscores the commitment of both India and Bangladesh to operationalise this vital international link. The Akhaura-Agartala Railway Link was meticulously constructed by the North East Frontier Railways, with funding provided by Indian grants. The ongoing construction of this rail link, which forms a vital part of a larger project aimed at connecting Bangladesh to India's Tripura, has received a financial allocation of Rs 153.84 crore from the Railway Ministry, out of the total project cost of Rs 862.58 crore”.
He said that this railway link's inclusion within the framework of 16 designated transit routes holds significant importance as it enables seamless cargo transportation between the Chattogram and Mongla ports in Bangladesh and several states in India. This development is expected to boost trade and improve living standards in the bordering regions.
“As the work is almost over we are planning to inaugurate it by September 09 or 10. During the inauguration both the prime ministers of India and Bangladesh would be present”, said the source.
