Agartala Press Club commemorated its 40th anniversary on Tuesday with a vibrant procession that attracted hundreds of participants from the media community and beyond.
The event, which commenced at 11:30 am from the Agartala Press Club premises, featured the flag-off by esteemed journalist Srota Ranjan Khisa and the presence of key figures such as Satyabrata Chakraborty, the club's founder secretary, along with founding members Subal Kumar Dey, Sekhar Datta, Samiran Roy, Samir Pal, and Pradip Datta Bhowmik. Other prominent figures like Sanjib Deb, Arun Nath, Fulan Bhattacharjee, Agartala Press Club President Jayanta Bhattacharjee, Managing Committee members, assistant secretaries, journalists, photojournalists, newspaper vendors, and media workers also participated.
The procession wound its way through significant landmarks of the city, including Ujjayanta Palace, Kaman Chowmuhani, Post Office Chowmuhani, RMS Chowmuhani, Orient Chowmuhani, culminating at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan. Participants showcased their enthusiasm with banners, placards and flags, creating a festive atmosphere to express solidarity with the press club.
The celebration extended beyond a mere procession, incorporating a cultural extravaganza. Many joined in singing Rabindra Sangeet, the melodies composed by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, while some indulged in dance accompanied by Baul music, a popular folk genre in Bengal and Bangladesh. The event became a joyful reunion of old and new acquaintances.
Established in 1984, the Agartala Press Club has played a pioneering role in promoting journalism and press freedom in Tripura. Beyond its journalistic endeavors, the club has served as a platform for social and cultural activities, fostering intellectual discourse and debate. The 40th-anniversary celebrations are set to continue throughout the year with various programs and events.
Following the procession, participants gathered at the Agartala Press Club for a celebratory lunch, sharing memories and experiences associated with the club. The day's program concluded with an invitation for everyone to join the upcoming 41st-anniversary celebration next year.
