In a bid to alleviate persistent traffic congestion plaguing the city in recent months, Agartala Municipal Corporation has embarked on a mission to clear encroachments from both sides of the city's roads ahead of the much-anticipated Durga Puja. This move comes as a response to mounting concerns over the city's dwindling momentum due to encroachments.
Raids were conducted across various areas of the capital, including Battala, Dashami Ghat and Shakuntala Road, resulting in the removal of shops and establishments impeding traffic flow. The eviction operation led by Additional Commissioner Mohammad Sajjad, commenced on Saturday morning, bolstered by a sizable force from AMC and the police.
The traffic department has already imposed a ban on e-rickshaws and pedal rickshaws to further ease congestion. Chief Minister's directive to ensure a traffic-free and clean city during the Puja season has spurred this action.
Mayor Dipak Majumder emphasized that the operation targets illegal road occupiers causing disruptions, assuring that those with valid vendor licenses will be allocated designated areas. He called for cooperation from city residents and warned of potential shop license revocations.
The operation is slated to continue in different areas of the city in the coming days, with an emphasis on evening operations. Shopkeepers are reminded that they may operate until 11 pm.
While established traders have faced losses due to the demolition of their shops, many citizens welcomed the initiative as a means of reclaiming road space and improving traffic flow. Pedestrians, particularly those traveling from Battala to Motor Stand, reported a significant reduction in travel time following the day's campaign.
