The Border Security Force (BSF) surrounded by a gang along the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura's Sepahijala district, has shot dead one Bangladeshi smuggler on Sunday.
The incident took place during the routine area domination march by the BSF troopers near Kalamchera area in Sepahijala district along the border.
Reportedly, during the march, the BSF troopers spotted a group of smugglers, armed with sharp-edged weapons, attempting to smuggle goods across the border to Bangladesh, following which the BSF troopers challenged the smugglers on both side of the fencing to stop their smuggling activities. Ignoring the warning the smugglers became aggressive towards the troopers and later encircled BSF troopers on duty and attempted to assault them and seize their weapons. Sensing imminent danger to their lives and government property, a BSF jawan fired a non-lethal PAG round in self-defense.
The BSF jawan named Rajeev Kumar was unsuccessful in thwarting the smugglers by using the non-lethal weapon and later after a brief scuffle, the BSF constable was compelled to fire one round from his service INSAS rifle. Resultantly, one Bangladeshi smuggler was killed close to the border fence and about 150 yards inside the Indian Territory.
Subsequently, a thorough search was carried out and a huge quantity of sugar, four machetes, and wooden planks were seized from the spot.
The deceased was identified as Anwar Hussain, 35, a resident of Mirpur in Bangladesh’s Comilla district.
A similar incident occurred on 2nd June 2024 in the same area, where the same group of Bangladeshi smugglers brutally assaulted a BSF Constable, attempted to drag him towards the Bangladesh side, and also seized his personal weapon (PAG) and radio set.
