A four-member delegation from the ruling BJP, led by Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy, convened a peace meeting in the Gandatwisa sub-division of Tripura’s Dhalai District following the directives of Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha. The delegation assured the victims of swift financial assistance.
The meeting followed a protest on the night of July 12, which resulted in the death of a youth and the destruction of several houses and shops set ablaze by the protestors. The situation has since been brought under control.
Three days after the incident, the delegation, including Minister Tinku Roy, former MP Rebati Tripura, BJP Vice President Subal Bhowmik and MLA Rampada Jamatia visited the affected area, facing a hostile reception from the victims.
Minister Roy told reporters that the Chief Minister had instructed the BJP leaders to meet with administrative officials, market traders, a delegation of those affected by the violence and local citizens at the Sub-Divisional Magistrate's office to review the situation in Gandatwisa.
The state government has taken necessary steps to restore peace and normalize public life by providing comprehensive assistance, including prompt financial help to the victims. We urge everyone to remain calm, patient and cooperate with the administration,” Minister Roy stated.
He acknowledged the victims' anger and frustration, noting that many had been living in relief camps for days. “Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha sent us here to speak with those who have lost their homes, shops and belongings and are now living in relief camps. While we cannot restore what they have lost, we assured them that the government will take all steps to help them rebuild their lives. The CM has issued directives and the DM has visited the area. The Revenue Department is currently assessing the losses,” he said.
Minister Roy also emphasized that during the meeting, he instructed the administration to provide financial aid within two days. “We requested the provision of approximately 25% of the aid and ensured security for the people so that the market can reopen. Our peace meeting aimed to promote harmonious coexistence. We listened to the victims individually and assured them that all necessary steps will be taken,” he added.
