In a heartbreaking turn of events, Alamgir Hossain, a 48-year-old man, lost his life in an unfortunate incident where he was mistakenly identified as a cattle smuggler and fatally shot by Border Security Force (BSF) personnel.
The incident unfolded on a late Sunday night at Durgapur village, situated in the Sonamura Sub-division of Tripura’s Sepahijala district, which shares an international border with Bangladesh.
According to sources, a group of alleged smugglers was attempting to transport cows to Bangladesh on that ill-fated night.
"In their efforts to apprehend the smugglers, the BSF No. 133 battalion personnel found themselves in a confrontation. The BSF personnel were met with aggression, prompting them to open fire. While the remaining smugglers managed to escape, Alamgir Hossain, who was mistakenly associated with the smuggling, tragically succumbed to his injuries on the spot," a reliable source stated.
Local residents promptly rushed Alamgir to the Sonamura Social Health Centre, where the attending physician sadly pronounced him dead.
Alamgir's family vehemently asserts his complete innocence in the smuggling operation.
"As the BSF pursued the smugglers, they sought refuge near Alamgir's residence, close to the border. It was during this critical moment that the innocent Alamgir was fatally shot by the BSF. While the smugglers evaded capture, Alamgir, an innocent bystander, lost his life. We are devastated by the actions of the BSF and find it impossible to continue living here due to their unwarranted persecution. We demand rigorous action against the BSF personnel", the family members said.
