Late Tuesday night in Matinagar of Kamalasagar assembly constituency, a clash between Border Security Force (BSF) personnel and villagers escalated into violence, leaving two jawans and three civilians injured. The confrontation reportedly centered on a smuggling trade, with ganja being the focal point of the altercation.
Among the injured were Sajeda Begum (60), Feroza Begum (52), Rabiul Awal (26), and Asif Uddin (17). According to eyewitnesses, the skirmish began with shouting in the area, prompting some residents to venture out of their homes. However, the situation seemed calm initially, leading many to return home for dinner and retire for the night.
Trouble erupted later in the night when a villager stepped out of his house and was allegedly accosted by BSF soldiers. As the confrontation intensified, more villagers, including women, came forward to intervene, only to be met with aggression from the security personnel.
The incident drew attention to the ongoing tensions surrounding smuggling activities in the area, with the recovered ganja serving as evidence of the illegal trade. Eyewitness accounts suggest a chaotic scene with both sides engaged in physical altercations.
Local authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident to determine the sequence of events and hold those responsible accountable. Meanwhile, concerns over the safety of civilians and the need for stricter measures to curb smuggling activities have been raised by community members.
As the situation remains tense, efforts are underway to restore calm and prevent further escalation of violence between the BSF and villagers in Matinagar.
