Casual employees of the State Health Department have initiated a protest, emphasizing their long-standing demand for regularization. The protest, which took place on Monday, saw employees handing over a copy of a recent High Court judgment to the Director of the Health Department.
Ratan Debnath, a long-time casual worker with the department, shared the plight of many employees like him. "After working for a long time in the health department, we were recognized as casual workers in 2010," Debnath explained. They were assured that after a decade of service as casual workers, they would be regularized. However, despite many having served for 20 to 30 years, this promise remains unfulfilled.
Repeated requests and demands for regularization have been made to the head of the department, but no concrete action has been taken. This lack of progress compelled the workers to seek judicial intervention. Recently, the High Court ruled in their favor, stating that if regularization is not carried out, the employees should receive equal pay for equal work.
In a bid to enforce this judgment, the casual workers presented their demands to the head of the department by submitting a copy of the court's verdict. The protest highlights the ongoing struggle of these employees to gain fair recognition and compensation for their dedicated service.
