Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Friday inaugurated the state's first Fish Festival organized here at Agartala Purbasha Complex and said that the government is working to make the state self-reliant in fish production.
Addressing the gathering in the inaugural session, the Chief Minister said, “Government has taken various schemes and initiatives to encourage fish farming in an aim to boost fish production across the state.”
“Efforts are being made to enhance the livelihood of fish farmers in the state. Youths of this state, especially in the rural areas have the potential to become self-reliant through fish farming,” he said, adding that new water reservoirs are being created to encourage more fish production.
He said that earlier fish had to be imported from the neigbouring Bangladesh and other states to meet the demand of the state, but now fish farmers of the state are being encouraged for more fish production to reduce the import rate.
“63397 fish growers have been trained so far for farming through scientific methods. Various co-operative societies and self-help groups have been assisted with various aids to boost fish farming and production in the state,” he said, adding that about 116 hectares of new water bodies have been created to expand fishery.
Fishery minister Sudhangshu Das said that the state has an annual demand of 1.76 lakh MT of fish. The state government has undertaken various schemes to meet this demand, he said, adding that initiatives have been taken to develop integrated aqua parks in the state.
