The state cooperative societies have been playing a significant role in building model Tripura, said Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Tuesday.
Dr Saha was addressing the occasion of 70th All India Cooperative Week here at Agartala Town Hall.
“There is a need to turn the cooperative societies of the state into a profitable business,” Dr Saha said, adding that the cooperative societies will also play a significant role in generating alternate employment opportunities for the youths of this state.
The theme of this year’s Cooperative Week celebration is 'Role of Cooperatives in Five Trillion Dollar Economy and Sustainable Development'. In the event, the Chief Minister said that emphasis has been laid on taking the benefits of the cooperative societies to the grass root level, building cooperative based economic development model, new national cooperative policy and on the development of the infrastructure of cooperatives.
He said, “The Ministry of Cooperatives under the leadership of Cooperatives Minister Amit Shah has taken several landmark decisions for the development of cooperatives. These decisions include setting up 300,000 PAXs in the country in the next 5 years, reviving weak PARs, and setting up a co-operative university in the country, computerizing PAXs etc.
Presently Tripura has 3,183 various professional cooperative societies. These include 11 Apex Cooperative Societies, 14 Primary Marketing Societies, 56 Lamps, 212 PAX, 340 Fishermen Cooperative Societies, 415 Dairy Cooperative Societies, 310 Commodities Cooperative Societies, 325 Animal Husbandry Cooperative Societies and 2300 other Cooperative Societies.
The Chief Minister said that since 2018, 1726 new cooperative societies have been formed in various fields in the state. In view of the decision of the Union Ministry of Cooperatives, the work of computerization of 268 lamp packs of the state has started. Applications for registration of cooperative societies are being made through the Swagat portal under Ease of Doing Business, he added.
Meanwhile, the state Cooperatives Minister Shukla Charan Noatia stressed that the Lamps-PAXs have to be vigilant in taking loans as well as repaying loans on time. He expressed hope that cooperative institutions will play an important role in the development of the state in the coming days.
