The opposition CPI-M and the Congress party on Friday has hit the streets of the capital town of Agartala to protest the suspension of at least 146 opposition MPs from the winter session of the Parliament and slammed the Modi-led government at the Centre for the action.
Former Chief Minister and Politburo member Manik Sarkar, accompanied by the CPI-M state secretary Jitendra Choudhury and other senior party leaders lead a protest rally here at Agartala and slammed the government at the Centre to term the suspension of MPs from the parliament as ‘attack on democracy’.
Talking to the reporters from the rally on Friday, Choudhury said that the Modi-led government at the Centre has owned all means to sit in power in the ensuing Lok Sabha election and as part of this they are trying to shut the mouths of opposition MPs in the parliament.
“Ahead of the Lok Sabha election, the Modi government wants to shut the voice against burning issues in the country. The government at the Centre realized that they failed to meet the aspirations of the people and out of fear of losing the ensuing election, they are trying to shut the mouths of the opposition MPs,” he alleged.
Choudhury said that the mass suspension of MPs for raising the issue of breach of Parliament security is a big question mark on the existence of democracy. BJP should accept its failure in the security of Parliament, he maintained.
On the other hand, the Congress party on Friday called for a united fight to save democracy and marched the streets of the capital city denouncing the ‘undemocratic suspension’ of 146 MPs from the two houses of the Parliament.
AICC secretary Szarita Laitphlang, who led the rally here at Agartala opined that suspension of 146 MPs from the Parliament clearly depicts that democracy is in threat under the BJP regime.
It has been more than 48 hours that the Modi government has failed to address the crucial issues like mass burials in Manipur, security breach in Parliament, Sakshi Malik quitting from boxing, suspension of the opposition MPs and many more, she told reporters.
