The Sadar District Congress staged a vehement protest on Wednesday, demanding an immediate rollback of the recent electricity tariff hike. Protagonist Prabir Chakraborty and a cadre of activists stood united against what they perceive as an unjust burden on the populace.
Addressing the rally, Chakraborty expressed his concerns about the escalating tariffs, underscoring that the Corporation had failed to improve service quality in line with the rate hikes. He criticized the government for implementing the decision without proper consideration for the new electricity law.
"The state government's decision to raise electricity tariffs citing regulatory commissions lacks a solid foundation," Chakraborty contended, questioning the reasoning behind the sharp increase. He also pointed out the disparities, noting that Tripura witnessed a nearly seven-fold surge, while other states maintained their rates.
Turning his attention to the government's fiscal policies, Chakraborty alleged a series of fee hikes since 2018, claiming an environment of disorder and asserting that malfeasance and corruption have left the electricity corporation grappling with financial losses.
The protest march, commencing from the Agartala Congress Bhavan premises, wound its way through the city, concluding in a peaceful gathering around TSECL's headquarters in Bhuturia. Here, a delegation presented their grievances to the Assistant General Manager, urging a reevaluation of the tariff adjustments.
Critics argue that the tariff increase is at odds with the broader national context, prompting calls for transparent and equitable energy policies in Tripura. As tensions mount, citizens await the government's response to the impassioned appeal for a tariff hike rollback.
