In a move to embrace modern science and technology, correctional homes in the state are undergoing a process of modernization, according to Santana Chakma, the Prison Minister. Chakma made this announcement during the inauguration of a three-day state-wide e-prison web portal refresher training workshop held at Conference Hall No. 2 of the State Guest House today.
The introduction of the e-prison system aims to improve services provided by correctional institutions in the state. With this system, any citizen can apply to visit residents of correctional facilities from anywhere. Chakma stated, "The e-prison system has been introduced to provide better services to the correctional institutions of the state. This system allows any citizen to apply to visit correctional facility residents from anywhere."
During the workshop inauguration, the Prisons Minister further mentioned that the prison authorities will review and approve applicants' requests through the e-prison portal after proper monitoring. Once approved, the concerned applicant can engage in video conferencing with a specific inmate at the designated date and time, using the e-prison video conferencing system from the comfort of their own home.
Chakma emphasized that the modernization efforts also call for increased transparency and dedication from the jail staff in the performance of their duties. "The correctional facilities of the state are being modernized in keeping with modern science and technology. Along with this, he urged the staff working in the jail to perform their duties with more transparency and devotion," he said.
The workshop inauguration ceremony was attended by Prisons Secretary Tapas Roy, Inspector General of Prisons Aditi Majumdar, NIC Tripura Director Bimal Biswas, as well as trainees and officials associated with the event.
It is worth noting that the e-prison project has been implemented in the state jails since the financial year 2017-18, as part of the Digital India program. The purpose of the workshop is to familiarize the officers from all state jails associated with the project with the new features that will be added under the e-prison project.
