Chief Minister, Dr. Manik Saha, launched a scathing criticism of the CPIM and Congress parties, comparing their governance in the state to the oppressive days of the Emergency period.
Addressing an intellectual gathering at Rajarshi Hall in Udaipur, CM Dr. Saha expressed deep concern about the erosion of democracy during their respective tenures.
"The memories of the dark days of the 1975 Emergency period are still fresh in our minds. An atmosphere of fear prevailed during Chief Minister Sukhomoy Sengupta's leadership in Tripura. Many politicians were imprisoned, and press freedom was curtailed. The CPIM's 25-year rule in the state resembled the Emergency period, as they dismantled democracy under the guise of upholding it. Similarly, during the Congress-TUJS alliance government for five years, the situation mirrored that of 1975. The people lived in fear, and incidents of murder, terrorism, and crime were rampant," said CM Dr. Saha.
He further drew parallels between the throttling of democracy in West Bengal and Kerala and the Emergency.
"In a similar manner, although with some variations, these two parties also suppressed democracy in Tripura. However in 2018, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the people of Tripura were freed from such misrule”, said CM.
Dr. Saha also noted that until the recent 2023 assembly elections, peaceful elections were unheard of in Tripura.
