The World Environment Day (WED) is observed every year on 5th June with a view to spread environmental awareness and to encourage the society to protect and preserve the environment for sustainable world.
This year’s theme of World Environment Day is “Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience”, which emphasizes critical environmental challenges related to water scarcity, drought, land degradation, desertification, and the need for water conservation and land restoration.
Like every year, Tripura State Pollution Control Board, Department of Science. Technology & Environment, Govt. of Tripura is going to celebrate World Environment Day-2024 with an aim to generate awareness on the importance of the day by organizing various programmes.
As a part of the World Environment Day-2024 celebration, a Cycle Rally was organized by the Tripura State Pollution Control Board, Department of Science, Technology & Environment, Govt. of Tripura with the active participation of Agartala Cycloholic Foundation on June 02 to sensitize the common citizen to eliminate the Single Use Plastic items.
The cycle rally was flagged off by Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha which commenced from Heritage Park, Agartala and travelled in the entire Agartala city. A.M. Kanfade, PCCF & Head of Forests was present in the programme. The Principal Secretaries and Secretaries of the different line Departments and other officials were present in this programme. The District Magistrate & Collector, West Tripura district was also present in the flag off programme.
In his welcome address, Dr. K. Sasikumar, Secretary, Science, Technology & Environment and Chairman, Tripura State Pollution Control Board briefly elucidated the objective of this Cycle Rally and urges every section of the society to play an active role in curbing the single use plastic item menace.
The Chief Secretary, has appreciated the efforts of the Department of Science, Technology & Environment and Tripura State Pollution Control Board. He has also requested to perform such IEC activities throughout the year to keep our environment clean and green.
In addition to this cycle rally, the Tripura State Pollution Control Board has also planned to conduct various outreach activities on World Environment Day-2024 which includes a Mass Rally involving College, School students, NSS volunteer, Voluntary Organisations and other activists. The Mass Rally will be commenced from the Sukanta Academy at 06:30 AM on 5th June. Along with that, a Sit & Draw Competition for school students and Sapling Distribution Programme will be conducted at Sukanta Academy Auditorium on 5th June, 2024 onwards 7.00 am. A Plantation drive will be conducted at Debendra Chandra Nagar’s reclaimed Solid Waste Disposal site on 5th June at 11:30 AM. Dustbins and sapling will be distributed to the Hostels of different schools on the occasion of World Environment Day, 2024.
