Five held after mob attacks Police following a protest

AGARTALA:

As many as five persons were arrested after they launched attacks on police, vandalizing their vehicles following a protest after a suspected vehicle, reportedly smuggling sugar, killed one person while another one sustained injuries late Thursday night at Chelikhola village under Bishalgarh sub-division in Sepahijala District.

Speaking with reporters Officer-In-Charge of Bishalgarh Police Station, Rana Chatterjee said that during a protest a section of the mob launched attacks on police during their official duties.

"An accident took place where a 24-year-old man identified as Bishu Lodh died after a Bolero vehicle allegedly carrying sugar hit the deceased person who was on a bike along with his friend, who sustained severe injuries. Since the deceased was from the locality, the local people launched a protest demanding the instant arrest of the accused person and detaining of the vehicle. We tried to control the situation as we have also detained the involved vehicle. But among the protestors, some unruly people started pelting stones at police, set fire to a police vehicle and also damaged three vehicles,” said the officer.

He said that the police have arrested five persons but the main accused who killed the person is on the run.

“We are looking for him now. We will produce them before the court seeking police remand,” he said.

Late Thursday night, soon after the incident, the Bishalgarh Legislative Assembly MLA, Sushanta Deb, rushed to the spot and ordered the police to take strict action as soon as possible against those involved in the attacks and to take further steps to stop the sugar smuggling.
