In a significant breakthrough, the East Agartala police station successfully apprehended four notorious thieves, including the alleged mastermind, Amit Debbarma (22), in a raid conducted today. The arrests follow a surge in thefts in the city attributed to factors such as scarcity, hunger, and drug dealing, as claimed by Sadar Sub-division Police Officer Debprasad Roy.
The police, acting on secret information, managed to nab the culprits and recover stolen gold jewellery during the operation. Debprasad Roy, while addressing the media, emphasized that the interrogation of the arrested individuals is expected to unveil crucial information about the workings of the thief gang.
The arrests are linked to recent cases of gold jewellery thefts reported from Banamalipur and Dhaleshwar on December 20 and 29 last year. Numerous complaints of thefts from various locations prompted a thorough investigation by the police.
During the raid, Amit Debbarma was apprehended, and various stolen items were recovered from his possession. Subsequent interrogation revealed the involvement of three additional members in the thief gang. Abhijit Debbarma (27) from Indranagar, Kamal Debbarma (24) from North Banmalipur, and Akash Rabi Das (24) from Abhaynagar were arrested and taken into custody.
The police also seized three motorcycles believed to be used in the commission of the crimes. The arrests mark a significant achievement for law enforcement in addressing the rising criminal activities in the city.
