Govt restricts movement on NH-08, Howrah river embankment

AGARTALA:

The state government has imposed restrictions on vehicle movement along the NH-08 near 47 Miles and the embankment areas of the Katakhal and Howrah River.

In an official order, Khowai District Magistrate Chandni Chandran cited the dangerous conditions of NH-08 near 47 Miles, where large cracks, some over nine feet deep, have emerged due to gradual shifting of the road. Considering the severe risk, and in exercise of the powers granted under Section 34 and Section 26(2) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, the following restrictions are enforced: vehicular traffic along this section of NH-08 is prohibited until necessary repairs are completed. Non-compliance will result in penal action under Section 51 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005.

In a similar measure, West District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar issued a separate order, invoking Rule 30 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005. He announced that heavy motor vehicles are banned from using the embankment areas of the Katakhal and Howrah Rivers until August 30, 2024. Any violations will lead to the immediate seizure of the vehicles by police, who will then present them to the Magistrate.

Both orders are effective immediately and will remain in place until further notice.
