Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha delivered a strong message on Saturday, condemning attacks on doctors and promising to take decisive action against the perpetrators, highlighting the government's focus on the healthcare sector in Tripura.
Speaking at the National Doctor's Day Celebration in 2023 at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhawan, Chief Minister Dr. Saha expressed grave concern over a recent incident where a doctor was brutally assaulted.
"I was informed late at night about a brutal attack on a doctor. Immediately, I contacted the Superintendent of Police (SP) and Director General of Police (DGP) to address the situation. Although the specific motive behind the attack is not paramount, our government will not tolerate such acts of hooliganism against doctors. Three individuals have already been apprehended in connection with the assault. In the past, such incidents were more common, but I assure you that stringent measures will now be taken against the culprits," Dr. Saha stated.
He further acknowledged the dedicated services rendered by doctors, emphasizing that the current government actively visits hospitals to identify and rectify any shortcomings.
"We have allocated 10 percent of our state budget to the health department, and we are considering increasing this allocation. We will not compromise on healthcare. Doctors play a vital role in saving lives, and it is our duty to support them. Previously, there were no specific regulations pertaining to specialist doctors in the healthcare sector, but we have addressed this issue. Our focus lies in serving the people and promoting the overall development of the healthcare sector. The responsibilities of doctors are immense. Over the past 35 years, we have noticed that some individuals prioritized party affiliation over being compassionate human beings. However, we have moved beyond such mentality. We do not expect doctors to associate themselves with our party; rather, we believe that respect should be earned through one's competence and work ethic," the Chief Minister affirmed.
Dr. Saha expressed that his government is actively working to alleviate the burden on doctors caused by the high patient load.
"We understand that doctors often feel overwhelmed due to the excessive patient load. Consequently, our government is making efforts to reduce the patient load in state hospitals while simultaneously enhancing healthcare services by implementing modern technologies. We are committed to the development of the healthcare system and extend an invitation to doctors to provide their suggestions on how the government can further improve the health system in our state."
He also urged doctors to offer their valuable suggestions on the development of the healthcare system in the state.
