In a move to ensure the seamless conduct of the impending by-elections in Boxanagar and Dhanpur Assembly, the India-Bangladesh border will be temporarily sealed from September 3 to September 5.
The decision comes as the authorities gear up to oversee the electoral processes in the crucial 20-Boxnagar and 23-Dhanpur assembly constituencies.
The District Magistrate and District Election Officer of Sepahijala district issued an official order, adhering to the guidelines set forth by the Election Commission of India. The border sealing will begin promptly at 7 AM on September 3 and will remain enforced until the conclusion of polling on September 5.
During this period, only essential personnel will be permitted to cross the border, including officers and jawans of the Border Security Force (BSF), responsible government officials and members of the security forces. The strict measures aim to maintain the sanctity of the electoral process and prevent any potential disruptions.
Concurrently, reciprocal actions will be taken on the Bangladeshi side of the border. No individuals from Bangladesh will be allowed to enter India through the Srimantpur Immigration Center of the Sonamura subdivision in Sepahijala district for the duration of the border closure.
This precautionary step is being taken to guarantee the smooth functioning of the democratic process and to uphold the integrity of the by-elections.
Drugs worth Rs 9 crore seized in Assam, two peddlers from Manipur arrested
The Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police on Tuesday seized over 1.128 kg of heroin worth Rs nine crore and arrested two drug peddlers from Manipur, officials said.
