Innovative projects launched to supply drinking water from Dumbur: CM

AGARTALA:

Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha today said that several innovative projects have been set up based on the reserved water of the Dumbur water reservoir, making it possible to provide drinking water connections to many families through pipelines.

Dr. Saha gave this information in the Assembly on Thursday in response to the reference period brought by MLA Ranjit Das regarding the initiative to purify the reserved water of the Dumbur reservoir and supply it as drinking water to the people without interruption.

In this regard, Dr. Saha said that as per the department's plan, one innovative project has been set up in Sadainanda Para under Ranirpukur Village Council of Dumburnagar Block in Dhalai district and another in Prabhuram Para under Naikkachhara Village Council.

“Out of these, the Sadainanda Para innovative project was launched in March 2024. Through this project, drinking water is being supplied to a total of 65 families through pipelines, while the Prabhuram Para innovative project is awaiting an electricity connection. It is expected that drinking water will be supplied to 55 families through this project. In addition, one innovative project has already been completed and launched in Narayan Sardar Para under Paschim Potachhara Village Council of Raisyabari Block in Dhalai District, focusing on the reserved water of the Dumbur reservoir, through which drinking water is being supplied to a total of 55 families through pipelines,” he said.

The Chief Minister further stated that, according to the information collected from the Power Department and the Water Resources Department, the estimated storage capacity of the Dumbur reservoir during the rainy season is 28.69 crore liters, while approximately 18.20 crore liters of water is stored in the dry season.

He mentioned that a minimum of 20.98 crore liters or more of water is required for uninterrupted electricity generation from the hydroelectric power plant of the Power Department centered on the Dumbur reservoir.

“Even during the dry season, the water stored in the Dumbur reservoir is less than the required amount for about 50 to 70 days. At present, two turbines of the hydraulic power plant are non-functional due to mechanical problems. The Power Department is planning to repair these two turbines. Lift irrigation schemes and drinking water treatment plants have been set up to irrigate many small and medium agricultural lands at the foot of the Gomati River by utilizing the water flowing over the turbines of the hydraulic power plant,” he said.

For all these reasons, the Chief Minister also stated that it is not possible to build a large-scale drinking water treatment plant centered on the Dumbur reservoir at present.
