Journalist Sudip Dutta Bhowmik murder case: HC grants bail for prime accused

AGARTALA:

The Tripura High Court on Wednesday granted bail for the prime accused of the Tripura journalist Sudip Dutta Bhowmik’s murder case.

The prime accused of the murder case – Tapan Debbarma, the commandant of Tripura State Rifles (TSR) 2nd battalion, was arrested days after Sudip Datta Bhowmik was shot dead at the officer's chamber on November 21 in the year 2017.

However, while granting him bail, the court on Wednesday instructed Debbarma to appear before the inquiry officer every week.

The murder case is being investigated by the CBI in compliance with the demand made by the journalist community of the state.

Debbarma was granted bail by an additional district and session judge five months ago but the bail was rejected by Justice T Amarnath Gour in the high court.

Debbarma had then moved the Supreme Court which instructed the High Court to look into the matter afresh and satisfy themselves on certain conditions like whether the accused could escape or influence the witnesses.

The case was raised afresh in the high court and Justice Gour considered all the points and granted him bail.
