Landless families seeking shelter in forest in North Tripura; seeks CM’s intervention

AGARTALA:

At least 15 landless families of Kanchanpur sub-division in North Tripura District, who took shelter in deep forest area in Panisagar subdivision after eviction, are facing harassment allegedly by the concerned officials of the forest department.

Reportedly, the 15 families were residing in rented houses in Subhash nagar and other adjacent areas in Kanchanpur subdivision, but as they were reeling under crisis having no adequate income source, they were evicted from those areas. Their precarious situation worsened when landlords evicted them due to their inability to pay rent.

Following the eviction the 15 helpless families were bound to take shelter in deep forest area of Pekucherra in Panisagar subdivision, but their struggle continued after the forest department officials forcibly dismantled their shelters, on Saturday night leaving them to spend night under the dark sky.

The situation took a darker turn when forest workers physically assaulted women and children during the eviction.

The absence of female forest workers during the operation further exacerbated the trauma. Threats from the forest department staff loomed over the landless families as they endured a night under the open sky.

The helpless families however appealed to the Chief Minister of Tripura to consider their situation and grant some small pieces of land for them.
