Lawyers’ body protest against new laws replacing criminal codes

AGARTALA:

The state committee of the All India Lawyers’ Union (AILU) on Saturday hit the streets of Agartala to show protest against the 3 new criminal laws, to be enforced from July 1 this year.

The lawyers’ body labelled the criminal laws as ‘undemocratic’ and observed that the criminal laws will pose significant challenges for the public at large.

The protest targeted the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, which are set to replace the Code of Criminal Procedure, the Indian Penal Code, and the Indian Evidence Act, respectively.

Highlighting specific concerns, the lawyers’ body further observed that under these laws, the duration of police remand has been extended, and individuals who oppose government decisions may face immediate arrest.

The protesting lawyers criticized the government for passing these laws without any prior discussion or consultation with relevant stakeholders. The body however demanded the government to repeal the law.
