The opposition including the Left-Congress and the TIPRA Motha jointly decided to field the veteran Congress party MLA Gopal Chandra Roy as their joint candidate for the post of speaker of the Tripura State Legislative Assembly.
Roy has been elected as an MLA from Banamalipur assembly constituency in this assembly election.
Announcing the decision here at Agartala Congress Bhawan in a press conference on Monday, the Pradesh Congress President Birjit Sinha said, ““At first the CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Choudhury and secondly the TIPRA Motha had proposed the name of Gopal Chandra Roy as assembly speaker.”
“Over 60 percent of the people of this state wanted a change in this assembly election this time, but the BJP got the majority getting only 38-39 per cent vote share in the election,” he said, adding that the oppositions shall provide constructive cooperation to this government and shall fight inside and outside the Assembly for the interests of the people of the state.
The election to the assembly speaker will be held on March 24 next and the last day of filing and withdrawal of nomination will be held on March 23. Presently BJP MLA Binay Bhushan Das is acting as the pro-tem speaker of the assembly.
