Locals of Vivekananda Abasan staged a road blockade on VIP Road in Agartala to protest against the acute shortage of drinking water on Monday.
The protestors claimed they have been facing a severe drinking water crisis for the past five years, despite repeatedly informing the Agartala Municipal Corporation and the local Corporator, Lata Nath, no solution has been provided.
"We have been struggling with this issue for five years. We are forced to use a hand pump to collect water and carry it from the ground floor to the fourth or fifth floor. This is not sustainable. We have informed the Agartala Municipal Corporation many times, but no resolution has been reached," said one protestor.
The protestors also accused the BJP Corporator, Lata Nath, of making empty promises to resolve the issue, especially during election periods. "Every time elections come around, they assure us that the problem will be fixed, but nothing has changed."
Despite raising the issue with the District Magistrate's office and receiving several dates for action, no solution has been implemented. "How are we supposed to live like this? We are human beings and even animals need water. Since they are not addressing the problem, we were forced to block VIP Road today," one protestor stated.
Following the protest, police and the Deputy Commissioner of Agartala Municipal Corporation rushed to the spot. The incident affected 16 families of Vivekananda Abasan in Khejur Bagan, who have long suffered from water shortages. The blockade caused severe traffic jams on both sides of the road, resulting in significant inconvenience to commuters. However, after a series of talks and assurances from the officials, the road blockade was lifted.
