Former Tripura Chief Minister and current Lok Sabha MP, Biplab Kumar Deb, on Monday launched a scathing attack on the Congress party's dynastic politics, accusing it of surrendering power to the communists in the state due to family-based succession. His remarks came during a blood donation camp event in Agartala, where he also highlighted the importance of leadership emerging from the grassroots rather than from political families.
Deb took aim at the Congress leadership, particularly its handling of political succession, and contrasted it with the rise of leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who he claimed came from humble beginnings, unlike the family-centered politics of Congress. "My father was never a Chief Minister, and Narendra Modi, who started as a tea seller, rose to become the Prime Minister," he said, emphasizing the appeal of leaders who build their political careers without relying on family legacy.
The MP also pointed out that the Congress's failure to provide strong leadership led to the state falling under communist rule. He credited Union Home Minister Amit Shah's intervention for freeing Tripura from communist control. “Had Amit Shah not sent me to Tripura, the state would still be under communist rule,” Deb added.
Referring to his leadership within the BJP, Deb reflected on his own rise to the Chief Minister's office in 2018, despite having no ties to prominent political families. He recalled the opposition he faced from former Congress leaders like Samir Ranjan Barman and Sudip Roy Barman, who questioned why someone like him, without a political legacy, was chosen. “The people are above all, and it is they who decide who should lead,” he remarked.
Deb also reaffirmed the BJP's commitment to governance at the grassroots level, citing the importance of the new Mandal Presidents in the party. He stressed that these leaders would be held accountable for their performance in serving the public and ensuring government schemes reach the people. "If any Mandal President fails in their duties, they will be removed from their post," he asserted, emphasizing the party's strong focus on effective public service.
Deb concluded his address by reiterating the faith the people of Tripura have in the BJP leadership, particularly Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Shah, who have pledged to make Tripura a developed state.
