Lorry driver sentenced to 10 Years for Ganja smuggling

In a significant victory against drug trafficking, the Additional Sessions Court in Bishalgarh has sentenced a lorry driver to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for smuggling a substantial quantity of ganja.

The ruling was delivered by Additional Sessions Judge George Debashish Kar on Monday.

The accused, Selvares, was apprehended by Bishalgarh Police on July 24 while attempting to transport 3,390 kg of ganja in a lorry with registration number TN 47 AT 4858. Authorities reported that the drugs were intended for shipment to foreign countries when the police intercepted the vehicle. Following his arrest, a case was registered under the relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

After a comprehensive investigation and court proceedings, Judge Kar found Selvares guilty and imposed a sentence of 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. Additionally, the court levied a fine of ₹1 lakh on the defendant, stipulating an extra year of rigorous imprisonment if the fine is not paid.
