Over 1000 villagers of Maldapara of Gandacherra subdivision in Dhalai Tripura district on Friday boycotted the second phase of polling to East Tripura constituency and refrained from casting their vote as part of their agitation against bad condition of road in their village.
According to the official of Dhalai district, around 1059 voters were agitating against bad condition of road and improper drinking water in their village.
The official informed that alarmed by the boycott call and agitation of the villagers, the administration team approached them immediately to address their issues, but they were adamant to cast their vote.
“We convinced them several times to cast their vote and we even showed the DPR for construction of the road. We are waiting for the forest clearance for the construction. Despite that the agitating villagers refused to cast their vote,” the official said on Friday evening.
Moreover the District Magistrate of the Dhalai district Saju Vaheed A had a video conferencing with the villagers and tried to convince them, but still they refused to cast their vote.
The villagers started their agitation from Thursday onward and announced to boycott the polls on Friday. They refrained from going to the polling stations on Friday, said DM of Dhalai district Saju Vaheed A.
The agitators, who were seen standing outside the polling booths had not entered to cast their vote. They also complained about improper drinking water facilities in their village.
One of the agitating villagers said, “We made several agitations earlier and as a result we simply got assurances from the concerned administration. The road which has been left completely broken for a long time is not yet repaired and no necessary initiative was taken by the administration.”
