Moving in line with the Centre under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Tripura government is making comprehensive support to make the farmers of the state self-reliant, said agriculture minister Ratan Lal Nath on Thursday.
The agriculture minister accompanied by the state food and civil supplies minister Sushanta Chowdhury on Thursday flagged off paddy procurement drive of the season at Madhabari in West Tripura district.
Addressing the programme, the agriculture minister Ratan Lal Nath said that both the Central and the state government has taken multifaceted initiative to extend support to the farmers and make them self-reliant and also to double up their income. He noted that the average monthly income of farmers in Tripura has risen significantly, from Rs. 6,580 in 2018 to Rs. 13,590 in 2023.
Modi led government at the Centre has prioritised farmers to build Ek Bharat Srestha Bharat, Nath said, adding that starting from PM Kisna Sanman Nidhi Yojana to many other schemes were launched by the Centre to extend support to the farmers, he said, adding that Tripura is the only state in the country, which is providing fertilizers to farmers at subsidized rate.
Meanwhile, the state food and civil supplies minister Sushanta Chowdhury addressed the gathering of farmers and highlighted the government’s commitment to boosting the rural economy by ensuring direct procurement from farmers, a practice initiated after the BJP came to power in Tripura.
“The previous regime failed to implement such initiatives for the welfare of the largely marginalised farming community,” he said, adding that since 2018, the state government has spent Rs. 397 crore on paddy procurement, benefitting 1,07,000 farmers.
