The Animal Resource Development Department minister Sudhangshu Das on Tuesday attended the state level seminar on “Pig Diseases with Special Reference to Classical Swine Fever”, held here at Agartala Rabindra Bhavan and said that there is a need for effective disease management strategies to protect livestock, enhance pig farming, and support the livelihoods of farmers, create job opportunities through pig farming and strengthening the rural economy.
Addressing the event, the minister emphasized on piggery to strengthen the rural economy of the state. He said that piggery can generate mass employment generation in the rural pockets of the state. He said that the government working to boost the rural economy of the state and ensure sustainable livelihood for the people.
Meanwhile, Agri-business expert and Supreme Court Advocate Vijay Sardana, shared insights on pork-based marketing strategies, with a particular focus on Tripura. Dr. S.S. Patil, Principal Scientist at NIVEDI, Bengaluru, stressed the importance of routine vaccination and continuous disease surveillance to control Classical Swine Fever in the region.
Professor at the College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, Khanapara, Guwahati Dr N N Barman highlighted the North Eastern Region as a hub for emerging and non-emerging livestock diseases, advocating for the establishment of modern disease diagnostic centers in the area.
The seminar featured the recognition of the Pig Breeding Farm in Jalefa, South Tripura, for its outstanding pig management and production. The one-day seminar, sponsored by the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Govt. of India, saw nearly 200 veterinary officers and senior department officials participate with keen interest.
