In a dramatic turn of events, MNREGA workers in North Gandacherra, Tripura, staged a protest by blocking the Ambassa-Gandachara road, causing significant traffic disruptions. The workers were expressing their discontent over the non-payment of wages for several months.
The blockade inconvenienced commuters, with passengers facing severe hardships due to the unexpected road closure. MNREGA laborers from North Gandacherra revealed that despite multiple notifications to the Panchayat, no concrete steps were taken to address the issue, compelling them to resort to the road blockade as a last resort.
Responding to the escalating situation, high-ranking officers promptly arrived at the scene to engage in a dialogue with the protesters. After discussions, the authorities assured the workers that the longstanding problem would be promptly resolved. Following this assurance, the MNREGA workers decided to withdraw the road blockade.
However, the protesters issued a stern warning, indicating that they would join a more extensive movement in the coming days if the promises made by the authorities were not fulfilled. Expressing frustration at the lack of timely action, the workers pledged to continue their struggle until their demands for regular wages were met. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by MNREGA workers and the urgency of addressing issues related to timely payment of wages in the region.
