Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Sunday pitched to intensify fight against HIV/AIDS and generate a more awareness among the youths of the state.
Addressing an event of the state level observance of World AIDS Day here at Agartala Pragna Bhavan on Sunday, Chief Minister, also the state health and family welfare minister Dr Saha said, “Prevention of HIV/AIDS should be given utmost importance on public awareness. There is a need to organize more workshops and seminars especially to make the youth aware about HIV/AIDS.”
“Emphasis should also be placed on sensitizing students about HIV/AIDS and intravenous drug use through Red Ribbon Clubs in colleges and universities,” he said.
He said, “HIV infected people have the right to live like other common people. Therefore, if there is any kind of discrimination against HIV sufferers, there is an opportunity to take legal action.
“24 Hospital Integrated Counseling and Testing Centers, 133 Hospital Facility Integrated Counseling and Testing Centers, three TPPP Integrated Counseling and Testing Centers and one Mobile Integrated Counseling and Testing Center Van are functioning for HIV/AIDS awareness, counseling and testing,” he said, adding that a Prevention of Parent to Child Transmission (PPTCT) Center has been set up at Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS.
Speaking on the occasion, Health Secretary Kiran Gitte said that the fight against HIV/AIDS is going on across the country. The state government has also taken various steps to enable HIV sufferers to lead their normal lives, he said, adding that Tripura State AIDS Control Society is working relentlessly to provide the right to treatment for HIV infected persons in the state.
