Expressing concern over the recent eviction drive conducted by the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) ahead of the festive season here at Agartala, the leader of opposition Animesh Debbarma called the move an ‘inhuman act’ to deprive hawkers.
Addressing a press conference here at Agartala, Debbarma said, “What is the use of that eviction drive when the government had already allowed them to establish their business on the roadside? Eviction of the hawkers just before the Durga Puja festival, which is the first of its kind, is nothing but an inhuman act by the government.”
“I want a statement from the government in this regard as to why the hawkers need to be evicted ahead of the festive season,” he told reporters.
On a different note, the leader of opposition on Sunday alleged that kidnapping and looting cases ahead of the festive season has risen in this state, where even the VIP vehicles are not spared.
“There have been several instances reported recently, where vehicles from Dharmanagar to Agartala are being stopped and passengers inside were looted,’ he alleged.
He also castigated the government over the recent hike in power tariff and issuance of notices for property tax.
“What is the role of this government here, where some states like Punjab and Delhi are providing free electricity services, whereas the government in our state has increased the power tariff,” he stated. He said, “Government should have first ensured proper infrastructure and uninterrupted power supply by stopping load shedding before hiking the power tariff.”
