To further strengthen connectivity between the North East regions of the country with the neighbouring Bangladesh, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday jointly inaugurated the first Agartala-Akhaura cross-border rail link through video conferencing.
Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha accompanied by the officials of the state transport department joined the video conferencing from the secretariat.
The trial run of the first ever goods train from Bangladesh Gangasagar had touched the land of Tripura on Monday last with the first successful trial run upto Tripura’s Nischintapur international immigration centre of the Agartala-Akhaura railway link through Meter Gauge. The trial run of passenger trains through Borad Gauge will be conducted soon.
The distance from Gangasagar to here is 6.1 km and the total project length is 12.24 km including 5.46 km on the Indian side and 6.7 km in Bangladesh. Gangasagar is the first station (on the Bangladesh side) that connects India via Nischintapur.
The Prime Minister of both the countries on Wednesday also inaugurated two other projects of Khulna - Mongla Port Rail Line and Unit – II of the Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant.
