A conglomeration of 56 organizations of Tribal bodies in tripura under the banner of ‘Roman Script for Kokborok Choba’ on Wednesday accused the government of ‘language discrimination’ and demanded for adoption of Roman script for the Kok-borok language for the welfare of the tribal students of the state.
Holding placards and banners on their hand, the members of different tribal bodies organised a sit-in demonstration here at Agartala and accused the previous and current government of failing to take the Kok-borok script seriously, which has been pending for over five decades. The former tribal welfare minister of the BJP led coalition government Mevar Kumar Jamatia also joined the agitation.
The former minister and also the TIPRA Motha leader Mevar Kumar Jamatia alleged that the previous Left front government and now the incumbent BJP government is playing politics with the Kok-borok language. He said that several commissions were formed earlier to decide the script for the Kokborok language and had recommended the Roman script but the government has remained silent on the matter.
Jamatia however threatened to launch a massive movement in near future if the government fails to adopt the Roman script for Kok-borok language.
