The Kamalasagar-Tarapur border haat located in the Sepahijala district of Tripura is expected to reopen by the end of next month which was shut during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Border haats are weekly markets along the India-Bangladesh border where vendors from both countries sell their products.
In Tripura, there are two border haats which are the Srinagar border haat situated in the South district of Tripura, and the Kamalasagar-Tarapur border haat located in the Sepahijala district. Among these two, recently the Srinagar border haat was reopened after a gap of almost 4 years.
Speaking on the issues an official of the Tripura government who didn’t wish to be name said, “Today the border haat management committee of both India and Bangladesh side has held a meeting on the possibilities of reopening the Kamalasagar-Tarapur border haat. From the Bangladesh side, the committee was headed by the ADM of Brahmanbaria district, and from the Tripura side, it was led by ADM Jayanta De”.
The official said that after a joint visit to the border that, the officials found that the condition of the border haat is very bad and was not in a condition to immediately reopen the border haat.
“After a long discussion, we have decided that on the coming 14th of June, two engineers from Bangladesh and two engineers from our state will inspect the border haat for maintenance purposes. The Bangladeshi authorities have placed some demands like increasing security which will be forwarded before the government. And if the government gives us a nod we will take the initiative. After all this, we have decided to arrange another meeting and at that meeting, we will decide the date of reopening the border haats. We are planning to reopen within the next two months”, the official said.
