Tripura Police have arrested six individuals in connection with the lynching of a man suspected of theft at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) in Belonia, South Tripura district. The incident occurred late on Sunday night.
The victim, identified as Babul Mia (35), a resident of the Belonia subdivision, was allegedly beaten to death by locals who suspected him of being a thief.
According to police officials, the attack took place within the premises of JNV Belonia. "On Sunday night, a person was detained on suspicion of theft at the school and was subsequently assaulted by the public. When he was taken to the hospital, doctors declared him brought dead. A case has been registered in connection with the incident," said a police officer.
Acting swiftly, the police arrested six individuals identified as Mohammad Mustafa (20), Abul Hossain (40), Utpal Dey (24), Akash Das (23), Sanjay Tewari (45), and Shiv Shankar Sarkar (23). They were produced before the Belonia court on Monday.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Ashok Kumar Sinha condemned the act, stating, "No individual is permitted to take the law into their own hands. A thorough investigation is underway, and strict legal action will be taken against those found guilty."
