In a shocking incident today morning, six youths fled from the Drug Rehabilitation Centre located near Barjala under Sepahijala District.
The youths reportedly broke through a double-storey glass window to escape, resulting in severe injuries to two of them, who had to be hospitalized. This incident has raised concerns about the treatment of residents in these privately-run centers and the apparent lack of regulatory oversight.
According to sources, two of the escaping youths – Sagar Debbarma (25) and Khapang Jamatia (18) sustained serious injuries during the escape and were found bleeding on the street.
Passers-by who witnessed the incident quickly alerted emergency services, and the fire department responded, rescuing the injured and transporting them to a primary health center. Following initial treatment, they were referred to the Agartala GBP Hospital due to the severity of their injuries.
The families of these youths had reportedly paid the center substantial fees, hoping for effective treatment to help their loved ones overcome addiction.
However, it is alleged that residents at the rehabilitation Centre were subjected to inhumane conditions and physical abuse, prompting the six youths to take drastic measures to escape.
As the building itself lacked safety features like railings and fire control systems, the youths were forced to break through the glass windows in desperation.
According to residents, many de-addiction centers have emerged across Bishramganja capitalizing on the needs of families struggling with addiction. They claim these centers, often charging high fees, exploit residents and offer inadequate care.
Local residents have voiced concerns over the proliferation of such unregulated centers and have urged the Drug Controller, District Magistrate, and other relevant authorities to intervene.
