A BSF jawan along the India-Bangladesh border at Sonamura subdivision in South Tripura district on Friday morning sustained head injury after being attacked by a group of smugglers.
The incident took place near Gate 189 of the Kalsimura Dudhpukur border area, after the BSF jawan identified as Harish Chandra Pandey of the 150th Battalion stationed at Kalsimura Border Outpost (BOP) attempted to prevent an illegal smuggling operation.
The BSF jawan noticed that one Riyaz Mia, a known smuggler and the elder son of Momin Mia from Bagber Gram Panchayat, was attempting to smuggle sugar across the border. Soon after he tried to prevent the smuggling, Riyaz, along with his younger brother Rifat, father Momin, and mother, launched a vicious attack on the jawan.
Reportedly, Riyaz struck Pandey on the head with a piece of wood, causing a severe head injury and profuse bleeding. The attackers reportedly intended to kill the jawan, but Pandey, in self-defense, fired a warning shot from his service rifle into the air.
Pandey was initially taken to Boxanagar Community Healthcare Centre, where his condition was deemed critical. He was then transferred to GB Hospital for further treatment.
