In a move to strengthen bilateral ties between India and Bangladesh and bolster the economies of both nations, the state government has proposed the establishment of nine new border Haats. The proposal has been submitted to the Union Ministry of Industry and Commerce, with Detailed Project Reports already sent for two of these Haats.
The existing Border Haats, which include Srinagar in Sabroom of South District, Kamalasagar in Sepahijala district, Palbasti (Raghna) in North District, and Kamalpur of Dhalai district, were approved by the Ministry in 2012. Currently, Kamalasagar and Srinagar are operational, while work is underway to set up Haats at Palbasti (Raghna) and Kamalpur.
Since the formation of the BJP government in Tripura in August 2018, the plan to establish seven additional Border Haats in Bamutia (West Tripura), Hirachra (Unakoti district), Ekinpur, Amlighat, and Rishyamukh (South District), Raisyabari (Dhalai district), and Boxanagar (Sepahijala district) was initiated. A proposal was sent to the Union Ministry of Industry and Commerce for the opening of Border Haats in these seven locations.
India-Bangladesh Joint Border Haat Committee meeting in 2019 accepted the proposal to open two more new Border Haats at Kathalia (Sepahijala district) and Belchara (Khowai district). However, a final decision jointly by the Governments of India and Bangladesh is pending regarding the opening of these nine Border Haats.
The Tripura government submitted Detailed Project Reports for the approval of Border Haats at Kathalia and Bamutia on June 1, 2020. With the necessary permissions from the Ministry and the consent of the Government of Bangladesh, the opening of Border Haats can commence in Hirachhra (Unakoti district) and the remaining locations.
